START UP BUSINESS COST for GG's HOT SAUCE
START UP BUSINESS COST for GG's HOT SAUCE
Looking for $8,000 by December 8, 2024. No Man is an Island, it takes a village...
THE BEGINNING...
THE BEGINNING...
This creation of mine is my Art in a bottle. For years (literally over 10 years), I have been making my hot sauce as gifts for my friends and family. They always would tell me to start a business and I was waiting until I had the funds (that's me being a perfectionist and want to have everything in order before I start). Until a received a jumpstart from a dear friend of mine...So, after that dear friend placed the first order back in December of 2023, I had to get into gear and started with the necessary preparations to put this hot sauce in production. So, I made and sold out my first batch at the end of 2023 ( to my dear friend in Scotland and at work). With a leap of faith, I officially started GG's Hot Sauce LLC in February of 2024. I dove right in. I used my personal savings to initially start but it is isn't enough to continue with the monthly expenses, that I incurred.
THE "CATCH 22" STRUGGLE
The struggle is so real when starting up a business. After looking at numbers just for the production & sales, I was very optimistic about sales. However, there are regulations and permits you need to have when you are dealing with food items in the state I live in. I did take out various permits, my sellers permit, food handling permit, food insurance, registered the business as an LLC, etc. I thought I was ready! I wanted to start selling at farmers market. However, that needs its own separate permit, which costs $$$. So, I said, "No Worries". The requirements to receive a farmer's market permit, in addition to the cost, was producing & bottling in your kitchen with a cottage license or renting space in a commercial kitchen ( more fees). So, I said, OK, I can just get the cottage license and produce it in my kitchen. HOWEVER, hot sauce is not on the approved list of items...ugh. So, I had to find a decent commercial kitchen which will cost me approximately $100 for 2 hours a day. In addition to the drama, the commercial kitchen that I found, is expanding to rent out their kitchen and I am waiting for them to get their inspections, permits for this, so I am on the waiting list. Costs are already accruing, I was at a plateau. Having access to a farmer's market, where I can actually sell my hot sauce, seems like a it's in the very far distance.
NEVER GIVE UP! YOU GOTTA HAVE FAITH!
By the grace of God, I found another way to get my hot sauce in the public's eye. I was livestreaming church one Sunday and one church member mentioned that the reason she was also livestreaming was that she went to a pop up vendor event. I didn't know what that was so I asked her (offline after services). She was gracious enough to direct me to a women's networking group where everything started... finding a commercial kitchen, going to pop up events, quartemanias, etc.
MY FIRST POP-UP EVENT
MY FIRST POP-UP EVENT
My first Pop-Up event was in June and it was such a beautiful experience. It was a start of getting my hot sauce and marinade out there. It was outdoors and a bit hot but it was a wonderful experience
QUARTERMANIAS
QUARTERMANIAS
Then I was introduced to what's called a Quartemania event! This is where vendors make up some gift baskets that include their products. Then, participants get paddles where they bid on the items, Their paddle numbers goes in a drawing and a number is pulled out ( Like bingo). The number that belongs to that paddle wins the gift basket. The vendor of that gift basket receives the quarters that went to that gift basket. Those quarters help recoup the cost of making the gift baskets. During the breaks, the participants will go to the vendors' stalls and but products. These Quartermanias are usually a fundraiser event, too!

Fund Usage

WHERE THE FUNDS WILL GO...
WHERE THE FUNDS WILL GO...
The funds I will receive is to help with the startup of my business, GG's HOT SAUCE LLC. I dove in, using most, if not all of my savings. There are monthly expenses, such as tax service fees, insurance, utilities, product ingredients and packaging, storage, commercial kitchen rental, farmer's market certification & fees, just to name a few. Roughly comes up to $3,000. I have so many ideas for future products, hopefully in the near future, however, the equipment I will need, a freeze dryer ( so I can make my jerk marinade in a dry form), is a bit expensive, about $3,000. Initial costs of my business is always more than sales since it hasn't been a year and it takes time to promote my product to be able to see any profit. Also, some of the funds will help with creating an independent website, not just I webpage that I added under my KGKHART website, and a updated computer ($2,000) to take care of matters, such as images, label making, managing webpage, to be able to do zoom meetings. My old computer, that is almost 10 years old, is shared by me and my twin teen kids ( they also use the old computer for their school work, projects).
